Where Will Butler Land?

Superstars demanding for a trade has become somewhat common in the NBA today, with the most recent instance being Jimmy Butler. Butler has named his three preferred destinations as the Las Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Knicks. It’s obvious that Butler wants to move to a team with a bigger market. Butler has also expressed interest in teaming up with another star, and each of these teams has the cap space to sign someone else in free agency after the 2018-2019 season. Tom Thibodeau has said he is not fielding calls for Butler, but things change so here are the best potential trades these teams could make.

Las Angeles Clippers

The Trade:

Clippers Receive: Jimmy Butler

Timberwolves Receive: Tobias Harris, Wesley Johnson, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Why It Works: The Clippers will get a building block to try and build another championship caliber team like they had a few years ago. The Timberwolves get a solid starter in Tobias Harris and a potential All-Star in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. These players will help them continue to win with their young core as they continue to try and improve.

Brooklyn Nets

The Trade:

Nets Receive: Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson

Timberwolves Receive: Allen Crabbe, Kenneth Faried, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, and a protected first round pick from Denver.

Why It Works: The Nets get two guys that can help win right away, alongside D’Angelo Russell the Nets could be poised for a playoff run. The Timberwolves get three guys who can help fill Jimmy Butler’s void and a future pick. Jimmy Butler was taken in the late rounds as well so they know that where a player is drafted doesn’t define their career.

New York Knicks

Knicks Receive: Jimmy Butler

Timberwolves Receive: Tim Hardaway Jr., Emmanuel Mudiay, and Kevin Knox

Why It Works: The Knicks get Jimmy Butler alongside Porzingis. Those two alone would make a good team, and Kyrie Irving has expressed interest in joining the Knicks next season as well. The Timberwolves get three guys with their best basketball yet to be played, including Kevin Knox who shined in the summer league earlier this season.

Any of these teams would obviously benefit tremendously by getting a player of Jimmy Butler’s caliber. Thibodeau seems pretty set on not trading Butler, but this will be interesting to see the whole situation play out.
